Easy Fix For Oil Leak

Just got my new (to me) Central Machinery 12x36 lathe (like a Grizzly g4003) mounted on a stand and up and running properly. Rotation switch and power light problems fixed.

But when I ran it (no cutting, just watching it go round and round) gobs of oil was leaking from the head-stock oil seal. First thing I did was to look at the parts list. Not much help there. Called Grizzly to see if they had a new seal. They don't. Searched for info on replacing the seal. Didn't find much. So I took the...

Dro On G0755 Mill

I'm fixin' to (Texas term for getting ready to) install a 3 axis DRO on my mill and I have a few questions directed toward anyone that has done this. Looking at the back of the table, there are gib adjustment screws, and as I recall as I write this, oil ports. How/where was the x axis scale/reader installed? And for the z axis, I want to install it on the quill. Should the scale be mounted stationary, or to the quill with the reader stationary? Pics would be appreciated. Y axis looks to be a...

Tail Stock Dro On A G0709 Lathe

Sold some stuff on eBay and bought a DRO for my G0709 lathe, that installation is in another thread. At the same time I “invested” a whopping $25 from TPACtools.com for a tail stock DRO. Here’s the boring, long-winded details of my installation . . . sorry for all of the photos, but as the saying on this site goes, it didn’t happen if there aren’t photos!

I decided to mount the scale at a 30 deg. angle from flat, just makes for easier reading. Mounting the DRO involves making a bracket...

Dro For G0602 / G0752 Lathe?

Guys,

I have had my G0752 lathe for about a year now and think maybe I would like a DRO now. I see this one from CDCO for about $450. It is two axis, but would it make sense to do three axis and also put a scale on the tailstock quill at the same time? I see lots of people using a digital caliper for the tailstock, which I might do until I get the DRO but it doesn't seem like you see much in the way of people doing a three axis DRO install on a lathe?

Here is a photo of the CDCO unit in...

G0782 Lathe Review

Howdy Folks.
After saving my pennies for a long time I finally had the means to upgrade my 10+ year old G0602 little 9x22 with a new G0782 13x40 lathe.

I looked all over online and didn’t find a review so planned to write something for the community once I got it up and running.

FYI: I do not make my living as a machinist. I’m a hobby machinist at best and so take my thoughts with a grain ‘o salt. This is my first time using a "big" lathe and it's great.

Below are...

Shift Handles On G0755

I have had the G0755 for about three years now and in the main am very happy with the mill.
In most regards it has been a very solid machine. I have had one issue with the gear shift handles.
They are a phenolic plastic with a steel sleeve to go over the 12mm shaft from the head with a 3mm spring pin through both. I broke the right hand handle about a year ago and ordered another pair from Grizzly. To my surprise, they came with no hole drilled in them. I took the steel sleeve that I had...

5-c Collet Closer Installation To A G0709

Santa brought me an early present this year, a 5-C lever style collet closer for my Grizzly G0709 lathe! Grizzly does not sell a collet closer specifically for the G0709, but they do sell one for a 14 x 40 lathe (model H5948). The price is right at $270. The regular price is $450 so these are likely priced for close out.

Ted, a fellow HM member, took the leap and bought the H5948 model and found that the hub adapter fits perfectly on the spindle of the G0709 lathe. The draw bar tube is...

Intro And New Toys

Hey all,

I've been lurking for a while here trying to absorb as much information as I can on machining. I worked in a machine shop for a few years right of of high school, but haven't done anything much since. (I'm 53)

Made it to the Grizzly tent sale yesterday, long story short, bought a lathe and a mill, then some basic tooling to get me started. Should be fun!

Set them both up last night and did the break-in procedures. Now to mount them solid, level, and start making chips.

They both...

Anyone have a Grizzly G0757 Vertical/Horizontal Universal Mill?

I have been looking at this machine and there are some things I like about it, such as the price, the fact that it has vertical and horizontal capability, it has single phase motors so it can work right out of the box, power feed on the x and the fact that it comes with two horizontal arbors, with spacers. There are a couple of things I don't care much for, such as the R8 taper in the horizontal spindle and the belt changing (although finding something with variable speed in this price...

Gs0768 Bearing Loading

I picked up a new G0768 early in the summer and hit a issue while checking out the run out on a new chuck. My new chuck is a 5" model from LMS. I am using a 3" piece of 3/8" piece of carbide rod as a checking sample. My indicator is rigidly mounted on the tool post. My measurements are being taken about 1/2" from the chuck. Rotating the chuck mount location around, I got the measured run out <.0005". This is fine. The thing I noted is that I can deflect the reading about .001" by...

Hello, My Take On The G0749

Hello all,
I was in the machine trade for many years ending with owning a shop building food processing equipment for Stein, Con-Agra, that crowd. I left the trade when it became work instead of fun to own a shop, I never intended to go into business, it just evolved.
Ok, enough rambling, I have had many machines - ran many machines, I found my self needing a 16 to 20 inch lathe with the capacity to turn 3 1/8 (well,80 mm) acme screws anywhere from 5 to 8 ft in length. I don't have room in...

Does anyone own a Grizzly G0720R ? ? ?

Gentlemen,

I am interested in the Grizzly G0720R. I know its more $$$ than their other models and maybe that's why no one seems to comment on them.

Why do I like it? Variable speed, motorized headstock, tapping capabilities. But, I am fearful of the dreaded "plastic gear" issues like the 0704, plus I just have no information other than what's in the catalog.

At $ 3,295.00 its definitely pricey! I think I would be just as happy with the G0761 (less complicated) except for not having the...

Oil Treatment In G0750g Lathe.

When I first got the lathe three years ago there was a posting here about using magnets in the headstock oil sump to capture ferrous particles. I did that at the time for the headstock bot there was no easy way to do the same for the quick change gearbox or the apron.
I decided to have a look at the oil this year during the change and there is a noticeable difference.
From the photos the first two are from the headstock where the oil was bright and clear. The second pair are from the...

Drill Chuck Arbor Issue

I have a Grizzly G0752 lathe. It seems that the drill chuck arbor is about an inch too long. If I try to retract the tailstock quill past 1.1 inches or so, it spits it out. Can I just cut an inch or so off of the length to resolve this?

G0752 Low On Torque Compared To G0602????

Max Chuck Size

I recently bought a 10" x 22" G0752 lathe at the Grizzly tent sale. The only thing missing was the 4-jaw chuck. New ones come with 6-1/2" chucks. I was wondering, what would be the max chuck size that would fit on this lathe, and would it be reasonable to buy something along the lines of an 8" being as I have to buy one anyway? Is it possible to mount an 8" chuck on this lathe?

Thanks!

Is This Lathe Vfd Compatable

In about a month from now I will be ordering a Grizzly G0509G 16-40 lathe. it has a 3 phase 2 speed motor.
3hp-4hp. I would like to put a Vfd on as a 3 phase convertor.
I called Grizzly and they can't tell me anything about a VFD. All they say is they recommend a 15hp rotary convertor. I really don't want to have a 15hp motor running in my shop all day.

I am currently using an MSC Vextrax 13-40 lathe. it is single phase , Taiwan lathe. It is a very good machine, and will be keeping...
